Chimney Requirements
A proper chimney is the MOST IMPORTANT part of your wood burning system. A WARM CHIMNEY IS A CLEAN CHIMNEY. A COLD CHIMNEY IS A DIRTY CHIMNEY. A cool chimney becomes a STILL (condenser) for the warm gases released by the combustion process of wood burning. These gases, including moisture, actually will condense (solidify) on the inside of a cool smoke pipe or a cool chimney.
This action creates creosote. The accumulation of creosote inside the chimney system (flue) is a hazardous situation. It is important to provide adequate heat to maintain a warm flue. Adjusting the damper in the top smoke outlet of the CHARMASTER heat exchanger provides heat for controlling flue temperature.
(LOCAL LAWS MUST BE OBSERVED REGARDING CHIMNEY CONSTRUCTION)
Charmaster recommends the following:
Stainless Steel Prefabricated Insulated:
Class "A" Stainless Steel High Temperature Insulated: 8" Inside Diameter (Insulation between the individual pipes. NOT AIR INSULATED).
OR
Class A Masonry With:
Round Clay Tile Liner: 8" Inside Diameter or
Rectangular Clay tile Liner: Inside Dimension 6-3/4" x 10-3/4"
OR
Stainless Steel Liner - 24 Gauge Type 304: 8" Inside Diameter.
Wood-Gas models must have a SEPARATE Class "B" chimney for the gas unit. This chimney cannot be associated with any other chimney or any other appliance.
